Tencel: Lyocell & Modal

Lyocell & Modal is a natural man-made fibre that comes from the pulp of sustainable tree farms such as eucalyptus trees but it could be soybeans, bamboo grasses, or even cotton plants. Lyocell is processed in a “closed-loop system” in which 99% of the chemicals are recovered and recycled with minimum waste and low emissions. It is 100% biodegradable and recyclable making is eco-friendly. Modal is mainly made from beech tree, and though the production process is very similar to the one of viscose, it generates a fibre with slightly different properties. It is durable and flexible, and has a higher fibre strength when wet, which makes it easier to wash as the fibres keep their shape.  The important thing to remember is that they may be man-made but they are not synthetic. In fact, as fibres that are man-made from a natural product, we might call them semi-synthetic fabrics. Tencel is a Brand name.
